ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini Pricing Compared: When Should You Actually Pay?

Chat-based AI services are designed to move from a free plan to paid plans. The free tier handles plenty of writing, summarizing, and organizing. You start comparing paid plans when you want more usage, more models, or connections to other services.

Free may be enough at first. Repeated work brings limit notices, or makes you want a model that the free tier does not include. Then the pricing table gets confusing: some prices are in dollars and others in won, monthly and annual billing differ, and top plans are split into usage tiers. It becomes hard to tell what matters.

In the previous lesson, we looked at when to turn reasoning on or off for the same model. This lesson uses free-tier limits and reasoning usage to show you how to read a pricing table, when a subscription is worth considering, and how to choose by use case. The prices here were checked in August 2026. AI subscription prices can change without notice, so check each company's pricing page before you pay.

Plan / Tier

A plan is a subscription level, such as free, mid-tier, or top-tier. A tier divides one plan again by usage. As of August 2026, all three companies split their top plans into 5x and 20x usage tiers. The era of one price for the top plan is over.

Pricing comparison: prices checked in August 2026

Price alone leaves out important differences. Compare the billing currency, how often the price changes, and whether the top plan has usage tiers.

Billing currency is the first difference. ChatGPT and Claude charge in dollars, so the amount in won changes with the exchange rate. Gemini is the only one with a fixed won price. A foreign transaction fee on your card can make the real cost different from the listed price.

Prices are not fixed. While I was preparing this lesson, Claude Pro's annual-billing price moved from $17 per month to $18, then returned to $17 when I checked again on August 21, just before publication. I saw that change while checking the pricing page. It was a period volatile enough for "Claude Pro price increase" to become a search term. This table could be outdated in a few days, so check again before subscribing.

All three services divide their top plans into usage tiers. ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max, and Google Ultra use the same pattern: tiers with five or twenty times the usage of the standard paid plan. That is more than most regular users need. Keep the top tier in mind, but treat standard paid plans as the default choices in this lesson.

Standard paid plans lift two limits

Once you know the price, ask what changes. Lesson 1 divided free-plan constraints into model access and usage limits. Standard paid plans are mainly about widening both.

ChatGPT Plus: GPT-5.6 and more usage

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month and gives you the higher GPT-5.6-based reasoning model. The Medium and High levels on the reasoning slider from Lesson 2 open up here. Message and upload limits increase too. You also get more accurate image generation, expanded Deep Research, Projects, Scheduled, and custom GPTs. Go costs $8 and does not upgrade the model; it only increases the limit for the default model. The pricing page also says ads may appear.

Claude Pro: higher-tier models and Claude Code included

Claude Pro costs $17 per month with annual billing, or $20 when billed monthly. It gives you higher-tier models such as Opus and more usage. The Pro pricing bullets explicitly include Claude Code. That means the terminal-based AI coding tool comes with the same subscription at no extra charge. Unlimited Projects and Research are included as well.

Paid Gemini plans: more usage and storage

Google AI Pro costs ₩29,000 per month. It raises Gemini usage to four times the free tier and includes 5TB of storage. Context grows from 32,000 tokens on the free tier to 1 million tokens on Pro, which makes a noticeable difference for long documents. Plus costs ₩7,500, doubles the limit, and includes 400GB. Of the three services, Google is the only one with storage and family sharing as of August 2026. It is closer to a Google storage and AI bundle than a standalone AI subscription.

Payment signals: limits, top models, reasoning, connectors

Do not subscribe just because the free plan feels inconvenient. First check whether limits, better models and reasoning, or connectors are actually blocking your work.

When limit warnings appear two or three times a week

Two or three limit notices a week is the point where I would start considering a subscription. If it happens only occasionally, you can use the saving tips from Lesson 1, such as Claude's project caching. When it happens every week, the time spent waiting can cost more than the subscription.

When difficult work keeps recurring

If you repeatedly do complex analysis, work with long documents, or write code, you may keep reaching for a better model or reasoning setting. If turning on thinking mode has become part of your daily work, the free plan may limit the switch itself. That is a more concrete signal than a general feeling that the free tier is inconvenient.

When you need work outside the chat

You may need connectors that link your documents and email, or a tool such as Claude Code that works outside the chat. These tools often assume a paid subscription. If you want AI to act like an extra pair of hands rather than just a chatbot, that is another payment signal.

Claude Code pricing: included with Pro

Claude Code is included with Claude Pro and above. You do not need a separate Claude Code plan. It shares usage with web chat, so heavy coding also reduces your chat limit. If your usage seems to disappear unusually fast, see the Claude Code usage credits post.

How I would choose a plan

Reading the table from cheapest to most expensive can push you toward the wrong plan. Frequency of limits and the kind of work you do matter more. Here are the criteria I use.

• If you rarely hit limits: Do not pay yet. Run all three free tiers side by side. Gemini Free is especially generous because it includes access to the Pro model.
• If you mostly write and work with documents and want to stay under ₩10,000 per month: Compare Google AI Plus (₩7,500) and ChatGPT Go ($8). Remember that Go does not upgrade the model.
• If you want to choose one: I would choose Claude Pro because Claude Code is included. This track ends at the terminal, or CLI, so using chat and a coding tool under one subscription fits the learning path. If you mainly use ChatGPT, Plus is still a reasonable choice because its reasoning slider and custom GPT ecosystem are strengths.
• If you share with a team or family: Google is the only option with the storage and family-sharing structure.
